For beginĀner climbers with litĀtle or no expeĀriĀence, or gym climbers lookĀing to get outĀside, this intro course sets you up for sucĀcess. Set in the beauĀtiĀful lunar landĀscape of Joshua Tree NationĀal Park, our climbĀing school offers easy access to every variĀety of rock climbĀing imagĀinĀable. Youāll begin with fricĀtion climbĀing to develĀop your balĀance, and then incorĀpoĀrate both face and crack climbĀing techĀniques before proĀgressĀing to more chalĀlengĀing climbs. With our highĀly qualĀiĀfied guides you will learn stanĀdard climbĀing proĀtoĀcols under the guidĀance of expeĀriĀenced and supĀportĀive instructors.
EquipĀment, belays, anchors, knots, rapĀpelling and lowĀerĀing are all thorĀoughĀly covĀered. An addiĀtionĀal objecĀtive of this class is for stuĀdents to be able to evalĀuĀate and set up their own top ropes. Our guides lead the way as they teach you how to set-up top ropes, rapĀpel, and lots of climbing!
Add a third day and learn lead climbĀing funĀdaĀmenĀtals to take you one step closĀer to climbĀing one your own, withĀout a guide.

There are realĀly good hotel lodgĀing and restauĀrant options in the town of Joshua Tree where you can enjoy a showĀer, a soft bed, and some good dinĀing after a full day of climbĀing. Or if you want to take in some of the mysĀtique of the park, nothĀing beats campĀing under the stars and sitĀting around a campĀfire revĀelĀing in the days accomplishments.

This course involves the following:
- Rock climbĀing from 5.4āāā5.10+
- Climbers should be in good physĀiĀcal conĀdiĀtion and able to operĀate in a instrucĀtionĀal setĀting for a full day.
Course curĀricuĀlum (includĀing extension):
- SelecĀtion and use of ropes, knots and harnesses
- Anchor conĀstrucĀtion, equalĀizaĀtion, and evalĀuĀaĀtion of top-rope, lead climbĀing and rapĀpel anchors
- DevelĀopĀment of face, slab and crack climbĀing techniques
- BelayĀing a lead climber, lowĀerĀing, and rapĀpelling techniques
- Route selecĀtion, rope manĀageĀment and route finding
- MulĀti pitch climbĀing techniques
- HazĀard assessĀment includĀing a disĀcusĀsion of objecĀtive vs. subĀjecĀtive hazards
TransĀportaĀtion to Joshua Tree, as well as food and camping/ālodging are your responĀsiĀbilĀiĀty. If you choose to camp, you will be āācar campĀingā on this course; and need to proĀvide a tent, sleepĀing bag, cookĀing equipĀment, and food for your own meals. We recĀomĀmend arrivĀing the day before to secure a camp spot if you are climbĀing on a busy weekend.

Cancellation / Refund Policy

Itinerary
Basic Rock Climbing

Day 1
The day begins with an equipĀment review and a lesĀson on the essenĀtial knots typĀiĀcalĀly used in climbĀing. You will then learn propĀer belay and lowĀerĀing techĀniques, as well as comĀmuĀniĀcaĀtion sigĀnals. Once the basics are covĀered, you begin climbĀing ā getĀting to pracĀtice a variĀety of basic climbĀing moveĀment and get a feel for good footĀwork. After a break, the group will move onto steepĀer terĀrain. Top rope set-up, rapĀpelling, rope manĀageĀment, and lots of climbĀing will round out the dayās activĀiĀties. In the evening, MounĀtain MadĀness guides will often head into town for a relaxĀing meal or preĀpare their meals at the campĀground. You are welĀcome to join them to disĀcuss the dayās lesĀson or to learn more about MounĀtain Madness.

Day 2
The secĀond day will include more climbĀing and a review of the preĀviĀous dayās lessons. As the group moves on to steepĀer and more chalĀlengĀing terĀrain, you will learn anchor evalĀuĀaĀtion as well as difĀferĀent types of face and crack climbĀing techĀnique. It is comĀmon for groups to do a bit of guidĀed mulĀti-pitch climbĀing if folks are interĀestĀed. We genĀerĀalĀly wrap up the course by about 5:00 pm.

Day 3 (Learn to Lead)
Today stuĀdents will get opporĀtuĀniĀties to pracĀtice lead climbĀing under the proĀtecĀtion of a top-rope. StuĀdents will have a chance to have their gear placeĀments evalĀuĀatĀed and anchors criĀtiqued. In the afterĀnoon, we will conĀtinĀue to apply the skills we have learned throughĀout the course in the mulĀti-pitch climbĀing areĀna. As a beginĀning lead climber, you will also folĀlow your instrucĀtor up increasĀingĀly difĀfiĀcult and comĀplex leads to gain an underĀstandĀing of lead climbĀing techĀniques and strateĀgies. We usuĀalĀly wrap up the course by about 5:00 pm.
