Peru Season Strikes Fond Memories

This March, the orga­ni­za­tion On Belay TY was formed in hon­or of Tyler Ander­son, for­mer Moun­tain Mad­ness Guide, who passed away in the moun­tains of Peru’s Cordillera Blan­ca. Tyler will be great­ly missed by many, but the hope of this orga­ni­za­tion is to cre­ate a long-stand­ing lega­cy to his pas­sion for the region, it’s peo­ple, and those who will vis­it. Tyler had, and Moun­tain Mad­ness con­tin­ues to have, strong ties with local guides that work along­side our reg­u­lar MM guides, such as Gas­par, Ale­jo, Sebas­t­ian, and Shy. The aim is sim­ple; to increase safe­ty mea­sures, while work­ing along­side local agen­cies and guides.

On Belay Ty recent­ly held a 3‑day Risk Man­agers Course in Huaraz, Peru. The top­ics includ­ed hir­ing cri­te­ria of local guides, expe­di­tion essen­tials (first aid kit stan­dards, sat phones, res­cue and evac­u­a­tion resources avail­able), increas­ing aware­ness among local guides of risk man­age­ment prac­tices and poli­cies, and a com­mon emer­gency response plan that can be fol­lowed by all local emer­gency crews when a res­cue call comes in. A cou­ple weeks lat­er, 31 peo­ple attend­ed the first Wilder­ness First Respon­der course in Huaraz.
