This March, the organization On Belay TY was formed in honor of Tyler Anderson, former Mountain Madness Guide, who passed away in the mountains of Peru’s Cordillera Blanca. Tyler will be greatly missed by many, but the hope of this organization is to create a long-standing legacy to his passion for the region, it’s people, and those who will visit. Tyler had, and Mountain Madness continues to have, strong ties with local guides that work alongside our regular MM guides, such as Gaspar, Alejo, Sebastian, and Shy. The aim is simple; to increase safety measures, while working alongside local agencies and guides.
On Belay Ty recently held a 3‑day Risk Managers Course in Huaraz, Peru. The topics included hiring criteria of local guides, expedition essentials (first aid kit standards, sat phones, rescue and evacuation resources available), increasing awareness among local guides of risk management practices and policies, and a common emergency response plan that can be followed by all local emergency crews when a rescue call comes in. A couple weeks later, 31 people attended the first Wilderness First Responder course in Huaraz.
