Aconcagua Trip #3 Underway
Ossy called in from base camp on the Polish Traverse route for an update. Joining him on the climb are Johnson and the father and son team of Robert and James. Right now they are all settled in to their tents relaxing after a fine dinner of roasted chicken with rice, followed by peaches with dulce de leche. There was some talk about some Argentinean wine being served, but Ossy wisely did not elaborate about how much- likely just a splash for taste though as alcohol and high altitude do not mix so well.…, It will just have to wait.
Plenty of work ahead of the team anyway , which begins again in earnest the day after tommorrow with a carry to Camp 1. In the meantime, the team will rest, prepare food, and check gear on Saturday. The weather is cloudy with some snow, perfect conditions to chill out and read a book. Everybody says hi and is doing well. Ossy is excited with the group that he says is strong and ready for the mountain and the work to be done above base.
Once above base camp the Polish Traverse route travels the glacier and involves three more camps before reaching the summit. After their ascent they have the option to descend into the Horcones Valley and return to the starting point at the small town of Puenta del Inca by a different route, thus completing a circumnavigation of the mountain.
With the opportunity to see all aspects of the mountain and reach the highest point in the Western Hemisphere, this surely ranks among our most rewarding expeditions. To read more about the Polish Traverse click here. Otherwise stay tuned for more reports.
