Bolivia’s Trans Andean Trek or Climb

The Trans Andean Trek or Climb is one among sev­er­al of our oppor­tune itin­er­aries that allow our trekkers to explore beau­ti­ful moun­tain ranges with the com­fort of porters and pack ani­mals, and offer an option­al sum­mit climb for those who want a lit­tle extra chal­lenge. This year we had trekkers join us in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru for our ​“Trek or Climb” pro­grams, some of whom start­ed out the trip as trekkers and came home as mountaineers!

Dawn Wilkin­son, a trekker on our Trans Andean Trek or Climb, shared her pho­tos with us from her expe­ri­ence in Bolivia. She was intro­duced to the basic skills of glac­i­er trav­el on this awe­some Trek or Climb, a great start to pre­pare her for an inter­na­tion­al glac­i­er moun­taineer­ing course!

The team met in La Paz, Bolivia where they toured the city, explored the arcae­ho­log­i­cal site of an ancient Tiwanakan city, relaxed on the shores of Lake Tit­i­ca­ca in the town of Copaca­bana, and hiked the beau­ti­ful Isla del Sol for the first 3 days with a won­der­ful local guide, Grace.

After meet­ing with the porters and pack ani­mals, the team was off into the heart of the Cordillera Real. They trekked past the beau­ti­ful Lago Chiar Kho­ta, an alpine lake sur­round­ed by the spec­tac­u­lar amphithe­ater of Andean peaks, and set up camp at the Con­doriri Base Camp. The team, feel­ing strong and ener­gized, decid­ed to sum­mit Pico Aus­tria the next day!

As all three clients were feel­ing strong and ambi­tious on this trip, they decid­ed to attempt a sum­mit climb of Charki­ni. Although the team had to turn around before reach­ing the sum­mit, they were excit­ed to have learned some moun­taineer­ing skills and to have made the attempt.
