Vinson 2011-entry 2
MM office checked messages this morning and is happy to report that the team made it all the way to base camp where they were met by MM guide Jacob Schmitz who greeted them with a thermos of freshly brewed hot coffeee. Mark reports perfect weather, not a breathe of wind, and a plane stuck at base camp with mechanical problems; so they feel fortunate to have made it in!
Everybody is blown away by the scenery and how unique this place. For now they are settling in to base camp and getting ready to move up the mountain to low camp below the fixed lines. After a meeting with other guide services to discuss procedures and policies on the mountain our team will hook-up their sleds and start moving up the mountain.
We’ll post some photos from previous expeditions shortly.
In the meantime, wish the team luck!

This year’s team minus two. Full team with guides is eight.
We had our full briefing this morning about the trip with the company that handles all logistics for expeditions going to themountain. There will be about 40 climbers total heading in on the Ilyushin if the weather is flyable tomorrow. Our duffels have all been weighed and taken away. Nothing left to do but wake up and dress for the ice and hope we fly. The wind is hammering Punta Arenas today and it takes a concentrated effort to stay on your feet just walking down the sidewalk. So, we’ll see.
Update: the team was able to fly in today (all photos from previous expeditions)
