Climbers will find the Machu Picchu extension to be a great way to help acclimatize before a climb in Peru. Start out in Cusco at 10,909 feet / 3325 meters and explore the beautiful Inca sites of the Sacred Valley. Continue your acclimatization with a tour of the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. This great four day tour will give you a taste of Peruvian culture while getting you acclimated you for a climb in the Cordillera Blanca.
For Mountain Madness trekkers based out of Cusco, the Amazon extension offers an opportunity to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the Amazon. You can choose from a variety of itineraries that will take you from the rivers to the tree canopies of this amazing rain forest.

Itinerary
Sample: Cusco and Machu Picchu

Day 1
Cusco
Start in Cusco where you check into the hotel before enjoying an afternoon city tour.

Day 2
Sacred Valley
Today we visit Inca sites in the Sacred Valley, including the village of Ollantaytambo, one of the most important Inca sites in Peru, the circular amphitheaters of Moray, and the salt mines of Maras. Overnight in the lodge.

Day 3
Machu Picchu / Cusco
From Ollantaytambo we catch the train to Machu Picchu and explore this incredible Inca legacy. In the afternoon you will return to Cusco for overnight. If you are on a climbing expedition you will join your team in Lima.

Day 4
Puerto Maldonado
In the morning catch a short flight to Puerto Maldonado. You will be transported from the airport to the Inkaterra Butterfly House for check-in, and then a 10 minute transfer to the Jetty Port. From here you will take a 45-minute boat ride along the river to the secluded Amazon Lodge. Meet with the Head Interpreter of the Lodge to plan your excursions for the next three days and begin to explore the Amazon Rainforest. For those joining this after your trek or climb you will need to arrive in Cusco the day before the flight to the jungle.

Day 5
Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica
A buffet breakfast is available from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. Depart for your daily excursions followed by an à la carte dinner and overnight in the Lodge.

Day 6
Cusco
You will have time to visit the Inkaterra Butterfly House, a beautiful butterfly garden where you can observe butterflies in their natural habitat. Peru boasts the greatest number of butterfly species in the world, accounting for 20% of all butterfly species found on earth. The Butterfly House is near the Puerto Maldonado airport, where you will catch your flight to Cusco for overnight.
