Alan has been guiding since 2008 and is IFMGA certified. Climbing has taken Alan to the Alaska Range, Andes, Caucasus, Canadian Rockies, Sierra, and the Himalaya. He has completed numerous first ascents in various styles of climbing, including 2 first peak ascents in the Himalaya. In addition to first ascents of Himalayan peaks Alan has several notable first ascents of routes including the West Face of Tengi Ragi Tau (6,948 m) in 2020 for which he and Mountain Madness guide Tino Villanueva were awarded the prestigious Piolet D’ Or. In 2013 Alan was awarded the Lyman Spitzer Cutting-Edge Climbing Award for his climbing achievements in Nepal. When Alan is not on an expedition or guiding in the North Cascades, Wasatch or Alps, he can be found ice or rock climbing with his wife in Salt Lake. Additional certifications/education include LNT Master Educator, Wilderness First Responder & M.S. Outdoor Education.
