Avalanche & Ski Courses in the Cascades

Ter­rain selec­tion in the Mount Bak­er back country

We are pleased to announce that our avalanche cours­es and ski cours­es for the win­ter are sched­uled and ready to go! With a for­cast­ed La Niña and great win­ter snow con­di­tions on the hori­zon, stu­dents should ben­e­fit from the per­fect learn­ing atmos­phere. Join us for a three-day course to Mount Rainier Nation­al Park and get some intro­duc­to­ry knowl­edge about avalanche phe­nom­e­non, ter­rain selec­tion, trav­el tech­niques, deci­sion mak­ing, human fac­tors, trip plan­ning and prep, and com­pan­ion res­cue. Field ses­sions will take you to the Maza­ma Ridge, Par­adise Glac­i­er, Muir Snow­field and sur­round­ing areas.

For those of you look­ing to expand your cur­rent avalanche knowl­edge, try our Lev­el 2 course: Ana­lyz­ing Snow Sta­bil­i­ty and Avalanche Haz­ard.” Here you will delve deep­er into slab mechan­ics; snow­pack struc­ture, meta­mor­phism and vari­abil­i­ty; and ski­er trig­ger­ing prin­ci­ples. It is the per­fect course for ski patrol­ers, guides, and advanced recreationists!
